Energy Efficient Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) in Access Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
As concerns about energy consumption grow, the power consumption of the EPON becomes a matter of increasing importance in the heterogeneous networks. In respect of energy efficiency, the current standard has no management protocols aiming to reduce power consumption in EPONs. To increase energy efficiency while satisfying diverse QoS requirements, the sleep mode operation is introduced in an Optical Network Unit (ONU) and a suitable sleep/wakeup time schedule is determined at the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The scheduling algorithms are tightly coupled with the upstream bandwidth allocation and downstream transmission profile. Simulation results show that a well designed scheduling discipline is essential to achieving significant energy saving while meeting the delay constraint. Key–Words: EPON, scheduling algorithms

Enhanced Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Algorithm in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks
Byungjoo Park et al. 301 As broadband access is evolving from digital subscriber lines to optical access networks, Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are considered a promising solution for next generation broadband access. The point-tomultipoint topology of EPONs requires a time-division multiple access MAC protocol for upstream transmission. In this paper, we propose a new enhanced dyn...
متن کاملUsing Bayesian Belief Networks for Burst Detection in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks
The Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) have been considered as a promising candidate for the next generation wired access networks for quite some time. In EPONs bandwidth requests and bandwidth allocations are critical issues which need to be addressed efficiently in order to guarantee the End-to-End (ETE) Quality of Service (QoS) for diverse classes of services. In this paper, we discus...
متن کاملEnabling next Generation Ethernet Access with Ethernet Passive Optical Networks
This article describes Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs), an emerging local subscriber access architecture that combines low cost point-to-multipoint fiber infrastructure with Ethernet. EPONs are designed to carry Ethernet frames at standard Ethernet rates. EPONs use a single trunk fiber that extends from a central office to a passive optical splitter, which then fans out to multiple op...
متن کاملBandwidth allocation in Diffserv-enabled ethernet passive optical networks
Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) have attracted considerable attention from industry as they offer a simple, highly flexible and cost effective solution to the problem of providing broadband access to a customer. In this paper, a new approach to bandwidth allocation in EPONs is presented where the Optical Line Terminator (OLT) has full control over the access mechanism. This results in...
متن کاملLimited sharing with traffic prediction for dynamic bandwidth allocation and QoS provisioning over Ethernet passive optical networks
As an inexpensive, simple, and scalable solution for broadband access, Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) have the capability of delivering integrated broadband services to the end users. A critical issue of EPONs is the utility of a shared upstream channel among the local users, and thus an efficient bandwidth allocation mechanism is required to facilitate statistical multiplexing among...
